"THE EYES OF GOD SEE EVERYTHING!"


The image of the “eyes” is a prominent motif that appears in Crimes and Misdemeanors. It is no coincidence that Judah Rosenthal is portrayed as an ophthalmologist whereas the character of Rabbi Ben is going blind. We hear as well that the “eyes of God” are always watching? What point do you think Allen is trying to make here in terms of God, morality, and ethics? Do you agree or disagree with what Allen is saying? Why or why not? Provide specific examples from the movie to back up your point of view.


A prominent doctor has his mistress killed. His name comes up in the murder investigation, but neither the police nor his wife seem to know he was behind it.

The high school student cheats on his math final exam. The teacher suspects him but has no proof.

The high school sophomore cheats on his girlfriend. His friends know, but she doesn't.

The high school teacher dislikes a student and at the end of the semester changes a few grades to make that student fail the class and receive no credit towards graduation. The teacher knows full well the students does not have those assignments with the grades on them. The failing grade puts the student's graduation at risk.
